The Georgia State Patrol has arrested a man they say led them on a high speed chase Friday morning that ended in a crash that caused a fire to break out in a strip mall. According to a report from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the incident began at the Downtown Connector when police clocked the man, driving a Porsche Cayenne, traveling at 105 mph in a 55 mph zone. A trooper managed to catch up to the vehicle as it exited onto Buford Highway, before the driver took off again.
At the intersection of Cheshire Bridge and Piedmont Circle, the police noted, the vehicle continued straight through the intersection and struck a concrete island before leaving the roadway. The Porsche then struck and traveled into a row of buildings before bursting into flames. The 21-year-old driver from Virginia Beach, Virginia exited the vehicle and was taken into custody and then taken to Grady Memorial Hospital, where he was treated for minor injuries.
The fire started in a finance business and traveled through several other businesses, including Papa John’s. Firefighters report that there was a substantial amount of fire and that the roof had to be reinforced before the burned vehicle could be retrieved and business owners were allowed back inside. This was reportedly not the first time a car had run into the building, but it is the first time one has caused this much damage.
