The College Park Police Department announced that the driver who had led them in a chase in a stolen vehicle one Sunday morning in January, 2016 before causing a fatal accident and fleeing the scene has been arrested. For six years, the family of the 75-year-old-woman and her 12 and 6-year-old grandchildren has been waiting, along with the police, to determine who was responsible for causing the accident that occurred during a Sunday morning police chase that ended when the man in stolen car struck the trio at South Gordon and Rogers Avenue as they headed to church. After the accident, the man reportedly took off running from the scene.
Police were able to recover his DNA from the vehicle, however. Recently, that DNA was matched to a man who was being booked into jail following another police chase. The man, identified as Diontre Tigner, reportedly told officers that he has been haunted by the crash for years. He is currently being held in the Fulton County Jail on charges that include felony murder and hit-and-run.
According to AAA, at least one hit-and-run crash occurs on U.S. roadways every minute, accounting for around 682,000 accidents and more than 2,000 deaths each year.
