A woman in Atlanta was injured in a motor vehicle accident involving a dump truck on Monday afternoon, resulting in a difficult rescue. According to the DeKalb County Fire Department, the accident occurred at around 1 PM on Rogers Lake Road and South Deshon Road. When rescuers arrived to the scene, they found the woman’s vehicle upside down beneath the dump truck, with the woman trapped under the dashboard. The truck needed to be lifted off of the vehicle in order to rescue her, but the soil in the area was saturated, which caused the truck to settle into the ground.
When rescuers were finally able to move the truck and free the woman from the vehicle, she was transported to a nearby hospital by helicopter in response to the seriousness of the accident and rescue. However, she was reportedly talking and moving her limbs after being extracted from the vehicle. Investigators were still trying to determine how the accident occurred and who was at-fault, but noted that the roadway where the accident occurred is a narrow one and that the fire department had responded to a number of accidents on it. The driver of the dump truck was uninjured.
Dump trucks and other large commercial vehicles pose a number of hazards related to the size of the vehicle, including significant blind spots, an increased distance needed for the brakes to pull the increased weight of the vehicle to a safe stop, and a high ground clearance that can cause smaller vehicles to slip between the underside of the truck and the roadway during an accident.
