Two people were dead and several more were injured — including an infant — following a fiery crash on I-20 in Atlanta Sunday, according to a report from 11Alive. The accident occurred around 5 AM, in the eastbound lanes near the I-285 exit on the west side perimeter of Atlanta when a Chevy pickup truck came upon a Dodge Charger in immobile condition facing the wrong way in the travel lane. The driver of the pickup reportedly attempted to avoid a collision, but wound up slamming into the Charger anyway.
As reported by Fox5, when police arrived at the scene, the Charger was engulfed in flames and the pickup truck was overturned several lanes away with one person partially ejected from it and another person entrapped. The driver of the Charger died as a result of the collision, along with a male passenger in the Chevy. The female driver of the Chevy, as well as a 16-year-old boy and an infant were transported to Grady Memorial Hospital. Emergency responders also rescued an injured dog from the scene. All lanes of I-20 eastbound were closed for several hours while police investigated, resulting in a traffic-backup that extended between I-285 and Six Flags Parkway.
Georgia is a fault state. What this means is that, after an accident, a determination will be made as to whose actions caused it. However, liability can be shared by more than one party involved. If an injured party is determined to be less than 50 percent responsible for the accident, they can seek compensation from other parties for the expenses and impacts of their injuries.
