A motorcyclist was killed in DeKalb County on Monday morning after a car turned in front of him on Moreland Avenue in DeKalb County, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported. According to the Georgia Department of Transportation, the accident occurred just after 7:30 AM, when investigators believe that a motorist turned left in front of the rider. Charges are pending for the driver.
The accident resulted in the southbound lanes of Moreland Avenue being shut down at South River Industrial Boulevard while the rider’s body was moved from the roadway and transported to the DeKalb County Medical Examiner’s Office. The wreckage was cleared from the roadway and traffic flow resumed there just after 9 AM.
Left turn accidents are one of the most common — and most deadly — types of motorcycle accidents, and generally occur when a driver turning left at an intersection where there is no green arrow attempts to complete the turn in the path of a motorcycle that is traveling straight through the intersection. These accidents can be the result of distraction, speeding, lack of visibility for the motorcyclist, or even inattentional blindness. Inattentional blindness is not a medical condition, but rather the way the brain processes information in a chaotic scene by focusing on the largest and most threatening features of the scene, such as a tractor-trailer or larger-sized passenger vehicle, while failing to detect the presence of smaller hazards such as motorcycles.
