According to a report from 95.5 WSB, an 8-year-old girl was injured on Sunday when she was struck by a vehicle on Conley Road NE. The Children’s Safety Network — a project administered by the Education Development Center, Inc,and funded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services — notes that more than 67,000 children are injured on U.S. roadways each year. Around 700 of those children will die as a result of their injuries. Teens between the ages of 15-19 are most likely to be injured in pedestrian accidents, Children between the ages of 5-9, such as the victim of Sunday’s accident in Atlanta, account for around 16 percent of child pedestrians injured or killed in accidents.
Boys account for 66 percent of the child pedestrians who are killed as a result of accidents involving motor vehicles, and children who live in dense, low-income, urban residential neighborhoods are more likely to become injured or killed as pedestrians.
As noted by local nonprofit, PropelATL, in a report published by Fox5, pedestrian accidents in Atlanta increased 150 percent from 2020 to 2021, prompting voters to approve more than $300 million worth of projects designed to make the streets safer for vulnerable users such as pedestrians and bicyclists.
