According to a local employee who works in the area, driving along DeKalb Avenue — a critical roadway leading from East Atlanta to Decatur — is “like a ride at Six Flags.” That will likely change soon as 11 Alive reports that the long-awaited DeKalb Avenue road resurfacing at various locations is slated to begin next week. The construction zones will be located along DeKalb Avenue at the following locations:
- From Ridgecrest Road to Jackson Street
- From Waddell Street to Cornelia Street
- The Krog Street intersection
- Krog Street from DeKalb Avenue to Edgewood Avenue
The $1.75 million project, which is slated to last through the summer, will involve milling, patching, and paving the roadway that is heavily damaged by potholes as well as adding bike lanes, upgrading traffic signal coordination, and improving intersections. Work will take place during the nighttime hours in order to minimize the impact on road users, Sunday through Friday. In the weeks leading up to the beginning of the project, the Atlanta Department of Transportation has been doing preparatory work, including filling potholes, relocating utility poles, and updating infrastructure. Transportation officials expect the traffic flow on the road to be maintained throughout the project, though they warn that there will be intermittent lane closures, temporary impacts to some businesses that have evening hours, and light and noise disturbances during the nighttime work hours.
The organization Make Roads Safe states that potholes are one of many road conditions that increase the risk of accidents, as they are structural failures that commonly occur on heavily-used roadways. Potholes can result in damage to vehicles, and can also cause drivers to swerve into neighboring travel lanes in order to avoid them.
If you were injured as a result of a negligent driver in a work zone, an experienced car accident attorney from Cambre & Associates can evaluate your case for free. For example, understanding how drive fatigue contributes to truck accidents can provide insight into the dangers posed by fatigued drivers. Additionally, being aware of incidents such as the holiday weekend dangers on Georgia’s waters or the DeKalb child who suffered a concussion after getting caught in a school bus door highlights the importance of legal support in personal injury cases.
