Two women were killed and another was seriously injured after they exited their disabled vehicle on I-75 in Stockbridge. According to a report from WSB-TV, the accident occurred just before 3 AM on Saturday when four people were traveling down the interstate in a pickup truck that suffered a mechanical failure and crashed into a jersey barrier. Three women inside the truck got out and were struck, killing a 49-year-old and a 22-year-old. A 23-year-old was fighting for her life in the hospital at the time of the report. Police state that two other vehicles were involved in the crash and both of the drivers of those vehicles were believed to have been under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
As explained by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 11,000 people are killed in accidents caused by alcohol-impaired drivers each year, accounting for around 30 percent of all traffic fatalities. While traffic experts note that drug-impaired driving is also a major cause of fatal and serious injury accidents, it is more difficult for researchers to quantify the problem, due to data constraints and less understanding of the impacts of various drugs on a person’s ability to operate a motor vehicle. However, a study of seven trauma centers revealed that 54 percent of drivers who had been seriously injured in car accidents tested positive for alcohol and/or drugs, including a quarter who tested positive for marijuana, and 9 percent who tested positive for opioids.
