The Georgia State Patrol (GSP) and Motor Carrier Compliance Division (MCCD) announced this week that their officers will be conducting highly visible patrols on area interstates and secondary roads during the 78-hour holiday weekend that begins Friday, September 1, at 6 PM and extends through Monday, September 4, at 11:59 PM. The patrols are in response to the thousands of travelers anticipated to hit the roadways in celebration of the end of summer.
While Labor Day is an excellent time for families to come together, notes Colonel Christopher Wright, Commissioner of the Georgia Department of Public Safety, “It is also an opportunity for motorists to continue ensuring safety is a key priority when traveling to their destinations and back home.” In 2022, the Labor Day weekend in Georgia featured 472 crashes, resulting in 9 fatalities and 243 injuries.
The GSP and MCCD hope to keep accidents low during this year’s holiday weekend by focusing their patrols on impaired drivers, speeders, distracted drivers, and those traveling without their seatbelts. To stay safe on Atlanta-area roads, the GSP reminds drivers to observe the posted speed limit and all other local and state traffic laws. Additionally, drivers should avoid driving impaired, ensure that all occupants are belted in, and use extra caution when traveling through work zones.
