According to the Georgia State Patrol, Labor Day weekend saw more than 300 hundred traffic accidents on Georgia roadways, resulting in 21 deaths and around 200 injuries. 14 of the State’s fatalities occurred in the Atlanta metropolitan area, including the deaths of five teens who were killed when the pickup truck they were riding in collided with another vehicle on the Ga. 316 onramp and flipped over onto I-85.
As reported by WSB-TV, two Morehouse students were killed Monday night when they attempted to pass another vehicle at a high rate of speed in a curve off Church Street in East Point and lost control. The students were identified as Hugh Douglas —the son of NFL Hall of Famer Hugh Douglas—and his roommate, Christion Files Jr. South Fulton police investigated a fatal accident on September 4 involving a car that left the roadway and caught fire on Camp Creek Parkway and Enon Road. Four fatal accidents were investigated in DeKalb County during the holiday weekend period that ran from 6 p.m. on Friday to midnight on Monday.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported that this was the deadliest Labor Day weekendin several years on Georgia’s roadways. In 2022, the state saw 15 traffic fatalities over the holiday weekend that began on Friday at 6 p.m. and lasted through 11:59 p.m. on Monday. In 2020, there were 19 traffic-related deaths across the state over the holiday weekend, which was the closest to this year’s tally.
