Located on 700 acres in northeastern DeKalb County, PDK is a busy airport. It has averaged 209,000 takeoffs and landings a year, making it the second-busiest airport in Georgia. This facility is home to 125 aviation-related tenants and is used by corporate jets and business aircraft alike. There are also several hangars and parking lots available to accommodate all aircraft.
PDK is a general aviation reliever airport. Its main role is to reduce air carrier airport congestion and serve smaller, general aviation aircraft. These include private planes, corporate jets, aircraft charters, and training aircraft. The airport’s Master Plan process is still in progress.
A relief airport or reliever airport is developed or designated to give relief or additional capacity to a region when the major commercial airport(s) demand it. Reliever airports can also relieve capacity needs by transferring non-jet general aviation activities from commercial airports. By removing smaller aircraft, the commercial service airport can run more flights with larger aircraft and accommodate more passengers, enhancing efficiency with little facility costs. This also improves overall community air traffic by spreading aircraft over a larger region.
It is the third-largest property taxpayer in the county and generates over $130 million in local income. The Airport is considered an economic and aviation contributor in the city and helps to support the surrounding area. With the numerous airlines operating in the metro Atlanta region, PDK is the third-largest property taxpayer in the area.
PDK is the second busiest airport in Georgia. It is the seventh-busiest general aviation airport in the US. PDK serves four major television stations and is the second busiest in the entire metro Atlanta area. The airport has over 100 hangars. It is second in Georgia behind Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport(ATL) in terms of number of flights per year. The DeKalb-Peachtree Airport is a popular alternative to Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport.
During World War I, the airport in Chamblee served as Camp Gordon. In 1922, the Army closed the camp and re-opened it in Augusta, GA. The U.S. government authorized the construction of a military airport on the site of the camp. The airport opened on March 22, 1941 as a Naval Air Station Atlanta.
1973 Dekalb-Peachtree LearJet Crash
In 1973, Dekalb-Peachtree was the site of a major LearJet crash.
A private aircraft, registered N454RN struck birds shortly after takeoff. Air Traffic Control informed the flight crew that there was smoke coming from their left engine and that they would not be able to return to the airport. The plane collided with the roof of an apartment building before coming to rest in a gully killing all five passengers and two crew members. One person suffered severe burns.
Further investigation revealed that the Federal Aviation Administration and DeKalb-Peachtree Airport officials were aware of the danger to birds at the airport. This was ten years after the opening of a landfill near the airport.
The probable cause of the crash, according to the final NTSB accident report, was the loss of power in both engines due to the bird strike. The Board discovered that the waste site near to the airport increased the risk of bird strikes. Despite the fact that the FAA and airport officials were both aware of the threat, they did nothing about it.
