A bridge collapsed in Newton County on Tuesday, killing one construction worker and seriously injuring two others after they fell into the Yellow River. According to the Newton County Sheriff’s Department, the accident occurred just after 5:30 PM, when a portion of the Access Road bridge near exit 88 on I-20 collapsed as the general contractor, Georgia Bridge and Concrete, and the subcontractor, B&D Concrete Cutting, Inc. began the first of demolition work on four area bridges.

In a similar tragic event, one person was killed in a head-on collision on I-20 in Atlanta, underscoring the dangers present on major roadways.

The 70-foot section of the bridge fell, causing a man on an excavator to also fall, along with the deceased and his coworker, who were loading concrete saws on the same section of the bridge. The deceased was found critically injured and it is believed that he was struck by a concrete saw. He was pronounced dead at Piedmont Newton Hospital at 6:45 PM. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is currently investigating the incident.

In another incident, one person was killed in a multi-vehicle accident near Mercer University, highlighting the severe consequences of traffic accidents in the region.

Additionally, a tractor-trailer crash on I-85 resulted in one death and multiple injuries, further illustrating the dangers and complexities of roadway incidents.
