The intersection of Scenic Highway and Dogwood Road was the scene of an accident on Thursday morning involving a police officer. While it was unclear at the time the accident was reported whether the officer involved was from the Snellville Police Department or the Gwinnett County Police Department, Gwinnett County’s department is reportedly the investigating agency and announced that the officer was transported to the hospital in stable condition for the treatment of minor injuries.
There was another officer-involved accident on the same stretch of road on September 9. In that case, an officer from the Snelville Police Department was responding to the scene of another accident when the crash occurred. The officer and two other people were transported to the hospital with injuries. The officer’s injuries were reportedly minor, while those sustained by the others were listed as serious but not life-threatening.
The location of the accidents is close to the intersection of Scenic Highway and Main Street (U.S. Highway 78), that has long been one of the busiest and most dangerous intersections in the county and also the site of major road improvements last year that included a dedicated right-turn lane if heading west on Main Street, two double-diverted turn lanes on 78 in advance of the intersection, additional crosswalks, and wider medians and islands.
Intersections are dangerous places for the occupants of motor vehicles, because these are the areas where all lanes of traffic, regardless of the direction the traffic is traveling, inevitably meet. Common causes of accidents in intersections include a driver failing to yield the right-of-way, drivers who are tailgating or driving distracted and rear-end other vehicles, and aggressive driving practices that are often employed by drivers who wish to escape congested areas.
