With July 4th falling on a Monday this year, the holiday weekend was 78 hours long, rather than 54 hours in 2021. During this year’s holiday weekend, there were 20 fatalities from accidents on Georgia’s roadways, according to the Georgia Department of Safety. At least eight of those fatalities occurred in the Atlanta metropolitan area, with holiday weekend accidents taking place in Polk, Douglas, DeKalb, Bartow, Cherokee, and Cobb Counties, as well as in Villa Rica, Newnan, and Sandy Springs.

A Marietta pedestrian was killed on Austell Road in a hit-and-run crash early Sunday morning, July 3.
A Danielsville man who was killed in a single-vehicle crash on US-29 in Madison County after he lost control on wet pavement and overturned.
An accident between a vehicle and a migrant bus in Colquitt County that caused the death of one person inside the vehicle on Saturday afternoon.
Last year, law enforcement officers throughout the state investigated 295 crashes over the holiday weekend, which resulted in 171 injuries and nine fatalities. This year’s fatality count is higher than the past two years, but still below the 26 deaths on Georgia roadways on July 4th weekend, 2018.
