The Atlanta Police Department announced on Wednesday that several people were injured in a multi-car crash on northbound I-75 near the Chattahoochee River. According to a report from 11 Alive, the accident occurred past Mt. Paran Road and Northside Parkway. While police could not yet say at the time of the published report how many vehicles were involved or how many people were injured, GDOT traffic cameras revealed heavy traffic built up behind the accident scene, as initially, all northbound lanes of the interstate were closed. Later, accident investigators and cleanup crews were able to get two lanes open before opening all lanes shortly before 5 PM.

Multi-car accidents, often referred to as chain-reaction crashes, typically begin with two cars. The force of the accident or even merely its presence on a major roadway filled with fast-moving traffic then results in other vehicles becoming involved in the crash. Often, more than one driver is exhibiting negligent driving behavior, such as speeding, distracted driving, or tailgating. Determining liability in such an accident is typically complex, as it relies on considering the driving behaviors of multiple drivers.

In addition to taking the statement of drivers involved and eyewitnesses at the scene, multi-car accident investigations can also involve studying traffic cam footage or other video surveillance taken in the area, studying the damage sustained by the vehicles involved, and even sometimes studying the event data recorders (black boxes) of the vehicles involved. Nearly all vehicles on the road today carry these black boxes, which record driving speeds and vehicle data from immediately before, during, and after the crash.
