A woman was pushed off a bridge on Monday afternoon after her disabled vehicle was struck. The accident occurred where the interstate crosses over Piedmont Avenue. The woman was standing outside of the Chevy Cruze in the emergency lane, talking on the phone while she waited for a friend to pick her up. That was when a vehicle collided with the woman and her car. The force of the collision caused the woman to plummet over the bridge, resulting in a 30-foot fall. She landed on Plasters Avenue NE, near the HERO headquarters.
On Wednesday, the woman’s father said she was undergoing surgery at Grady Hospital, where she was receiving treatment for injuries that included broken bones all over her body. Her father reported that the injuries were going to change her life forever, and that doctors are predicting it will be at least three months before she will be able to walk again.
The driver who is suspected of causing the collision has been arrested for the accident. He was reportedly speeding and weaving through traffic in a Chevy Camaro as he raced another car on the interstate. He had struck a Kia Optima on the roadway, forcing that vehicle into the emergency lane, where it struck the woman and her car. The driver of the Camaro has been charged with reckless conduct, driving too fast for the conditions of the road, serious injury by vehicle, and other charges.
